Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat a FIREPOT meal?
To eat from the pouch simply pour in boiling water, stir and wait. To cook in a pan, tip the contents of the pouch into a pan, add cold water, bring to the boil, turn off heat and wait.
What is the difference between dehydrated and freeze-dried food?
Both processes involve removing the water from food to preserve it. Freeze-drying involves freezing the food to a very low temperature and drying it in a vacuum to remove moisture. Dehydration involves passing warm air over the surface of the food inside a commercial dehydrator to remove moisture. At Outdoorfood we have opted for dehydration because we find it creates food that tastes like it should, with plenty of texture and flavour.
The other major difference between our dehydrated meals and the majority of our freeze-dried competitors is the fact that we cook all our food ourselves, by hand, and then dehydrate each meal without adding anything else. Other companies buy in freeze-dried ingredients and just mix them together in the packet, hoping the flavours will combine by the time you add water — they don’t.
What is the shelf life of your products?
We have a two year best before date. This doesn’t mean it won’t last longer but we would recommend using it in the first two years after purchase.
What are the portion sizes?
Our standard pouch of food (135g) will serve one hungry person. These are not the 300g portions you get in a wet packet of food, nor the ungenerous portions you get from some of our competitors. When rehydrated, these weigh in at a hefty 500g or more — perfect for a satisfying and generous meal at the start or end of a long day.
For each of our menu options we also offer an extra large serving size (200g) which is ideal for more calorie-demanding expeditions and outdoor pursuits.
How many calories are in a packet of your food?
The calorie content of our food varies across the recipe range - we are making food that is nutritious and healthy rather than choosing a calorie target and then adding high-calorie ingredients until we reach that target. Our range extends from 540kcal (Dal and Rice) up to 700kcal (Orzo Bolognese) for the standard portion size, and from 750kcal up to 1050kcal for the extra large portion size.
Can I use your meals in minus conditions or at high altitudes?
It is a well known fact that rehydration takes longer at higher altitudes and that a pouch of food will get colder faster in minus conditions, so we have intentionally come up with a range of meals that can be rehydrated and eaten straight from the pouch - just by adding boiling water. This pouch method will work in colder or higher conditions. However our food can also be rehydrated in an even shorter time if you follow the pan method on the packet. This method is particularly useful when in very cold conditions to avoid the problem of pouches freezing before they are fully rehydrated. You will be rewarded with a satisfying meal served at a piping hot temperature.
Are any of your meals vegetarian or vegan?
Yes, our Mushroom Risotto and Dal with Rice and Spinach are suitable for vegans. Our menu is constantly expanding and developing so there will be more options added over the course of the year.
Are any of your meals gluten free?
Yes, our Mushroom Risotto, Dal with Rice and Spinach, Chilli con Carne and our Posh Pork and Beans are all gluten free.
Where do you source your ingredients?
Being based in rural Dorset, we can find almost everything we need fresh at our doorstep. We feel proud to be able to say that our British beef mince comes from the local butcher in Bridport and all our vegetables come fresh from the local greengrocer in Chideock.
Do you add chemicals or preservatives to your food?
No. Because we dehydrate our food and then store it in pouches where oxygen, moisture and sunlight cannot penetrate, we achieve a healthy shelf-life without the need for preservatives or high levels of salt. We do add a pinch of salt and a twist of pepper to our meals, but only to season, just like you would at home. You can find out more about our approach here.
